Posco has awarded a contract to Linde Gases for the installation of Rebox Direct Flame Impingement (DFI) technology.
The installation will improve one of Posco’s continuous annealing lines at its steel mill in Pohang.
Linde’s DFI technology boosts production, as oxyfuel flames directly heat the moving metal, providing higher heat-transfer rates and resulting in increased capacity and reduced fuel consumption.
The technology can also influence surface properties.
The unit’s small size allows easy retrofits.
The installation will increase Posco’s production capacity.
Linde’s Rebox DFI unit provides pre-heating that can achieve approximately 15 per cent higher capacity in the annealing furnace.
The natural-gas fired DFI unit will consist of four oxyfuel burner row units with a combined capacity of close to 6MW.
Compared with air-fuel systems, oxyfuel can boost production throughput by up to 50 per cent, reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by the same amount and reduce NOX output.

Rautomead will present a range of continuous casting equipment and technology for the processing of copper and copper alloys at Wire Southeast Asia 2009 on 13-15 October in Bangkok.
High-quality continuous cast rods produced by upward casting may be used for the production of copper strips for transformers, enamelled wires, data communication wires, house wiring or power cables.
Fully automated Rautomead casting machines are available for the production of quantities ranging from 6,000 to 30,000 tonnes per year.
For smaller-scale production, the company has introduced the RSCC range of casting machines for the production of CuOF and CuAg wire rods.
RSCC models are designed to minimise investment costs and offer production from 1,000 to 3,000 tonnes per year.
RSCC casting machines are available in two configurations, either as a four-strand model for 8mm-diameter rods for high-quality wire drawing applications or as a three-strand model for 12mm- to 22mm-diameter rods to make feedstock for continuous extrusion technology.
RSCC models share many of the technical features of the larger Rautomead RS wire rod casting machines.
Rautomead is a UK-based continuous casting technology specialist.
